About The Public Internet ExchangeTM

Web Site Awards

The Public Information ExchangeTM is a non-profit -- 501(c)(3) -- organization dedicated to promoting the educational, economic and social environment of our area through the operation of a community network that is the Public Internet.

The future of Plano will depend heavily on its ability to capitalize on the Internet and the World Wide Web. The Internet is the transportation infrastructure of this century. It will be as vital as highways, airports, and waterways have been in the past. We all recognize the need for local retailers to compete in the new electronic marketplace, and we all recognize that education at every level must increasingly use technology. For local government to serve the public better with faster, more efficient methods, it must also use the Internet. In addition, just as public television and public radio exist, we need public internet.

Many people are not aware of the importance of providing improved Internet access for social service groups and for other non-profit service organizations. These organizations need Internet access so that they too can better serve the public. Many people in our community also need educational assistance to develop their language skills and to gain computer literacy.

In addition, because of its explosive growth, Plano needs to build a greater sense of community by encouraging citizen involvement and increasing citizen participation throughout the community. To accomplish all of this, plus much more, will require a common platform, an electronic crossroads for our city, or as it is more commonly known: an Internet community network that is the public internet.

As communities develop a rich variety of Internet resources, an Internet community directory becomes necessary to fill the public need for ease of use and simplicity. Either this will be a web design company or a media conglomerate strictly interested in profits (a dot com), or it will be a community service group (a dot org) dedicated to serving its area. The Plano Information Exchange, The Public Internet ExchangeTM, or The PIE.orgTM, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving our community. Five local businessmen who have served together as volunteers on telecommunications issues in Plano since 1995 founded ThePIE.org, Inc. in 1999.

The PIE recognizes that the explosive growth and popularity of the Internet also presents its greatest challenge, which is to simply find what you want to find among the 1 billion pages on the Web. The third most popular reason that people go to the Net is to find local information. Filling this tremendous need in the marketplace with a single directory source will make The PIE the Plano portal. This means that there will finally be a convenient way to locate local web sites in the Plano area. The PIE's success with this collection and organization concept will produce a powerful communications medium, which we will use, in turn, to support the community network.

The PIE, will reflect our community standards in Plano by maintaining a family friendly environment. Although our goal is to organize and coordinate all Internet sites related to our area, we will strive hard to make sure that no content will be included which will be offensive or objectionable to our citizens. Our policy on privacy is that we will maintain the strictest confidence of all information. We will never sell any visitor logs or membership lists to marketers nor will we use any information in any way without the full permission and support of each person.

A comprehensive Internet guide to Plano will be useful for everyone. The PIE will "localize" the Internet for our users and will improve access to resources throughout the city. By combining the best elements of community service with the spirit of free enterprise, we will provide a new electronic foundation for the Community of Plano.

FAQ

What is the Public Information Exchange?

It is a new kind of community network, a public internet, the Public Internet ExchangeTM. When a community develops a range of Internet resources, a local directory is necessary. The only question will be whether it is a commercial enterprise (a dot com, usually by a web design or Internet host), or if it will be a non-profit enterprise (a dot org) dedicated to serving the community, including all of the nonprofits. Plano has a new group capable of satisfying the community's need for a local directory, and who will use the results of their efforts to fulfill many of the technology needs of the nonprofits in our area. One of our first projects is to create and maintain free web pages for every non-profit or service organization interested in using the power of the Internet.

Who is The PIE?

The Board of Directors of The PIE is a group of five local businessmen who have served together since 1996. Since they have worked on the telecommunications issues facing Plano for several years, they saw an area which was not being addressed, and decided to take action. They will also have an Advisory Board to help The PIE grow.

What is a community network?

In the past, community networks have been created and maintained by computer experts working out of their homes or by a school or library. The driving force in many cases was to organize the local resources for maximum benefit. It was also a way to organize many of the "unofficial" resources of the area. Today with the explosive growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web, these networks now become the focal point for many types of computer resources.

Are you a non-profit organization?

The PIE is a non-profit organization registered in Texas in 1999, and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service has designated us as a 501(C)(3) organization. Donations made to the ThePIE are tax deductable.

Will you be asking for Plano tax dollars?

NO. We're local taxpayers too! We will be looking for private, state, or federal grants to promote telecommunications or community networks, but we will not apply to the city of Plano for any financial assistance. We hope local support comes from donations, corporate and private, along with volunteer support.

Do you need volunteers?

Yes, we need assistance in several ways today, yet we have limited jobs at the moment. The help we need the most is for someone to search the Internet to find new items for us to include in our database. We need items from Plano, Collin County and Dallas County. At this point, believe it or not, we do not have a great need for computer specialists. Later we will.

But there are also many other tasks that require no computer experience at all. The task of contacting all of Plano's non-profit and service organizations is a huge undertaking and will require a great deal of help. Even simple jobs like surfing the Internet from home to be sure we have the latest and most comprehensive list of local links is vital. Please join us!

Do you need donations?

We need all the donation help we can get. Like all small startup companies we have very limited resources. Most of our funds come from us, and we could use the help. This is a new and unique way to help our area, and it is your public internet.

How can I contact The PIE?

There are several ways. You can write to:

ThePIE.org, Inc.
P.O. Box 867598
Plano, TX 75086-7598

or fill out our contact form and we'll respond as quickly as possible. Email is best. Remember, this is an all-volunteer effort, so we'll get back with you as quickly as we can!
